Sportif Lezbon is Turkey’s first openly LGBT football club, founded in Ankara in March 2015 . Originally created by a group of lesbian and bisexual women to create space for women and LGBT players, the club is welcoming to all genders and sexual orientations . Sportif Lezbon uses football as a tool against discrimination and homophobia and was honored with the Hrant Dink Inspirations Award in 2018 for showing that sport can be a place of solidarity and equality . By 2016 it had grown from a few founders to a core team of many players, campaigning to break stereotypes in football .

Ankara has a small, discreet gay scene compared to Istanbul, with at least one gay club and a mix of students and diplomats. Public LGBTI events were banned then partially lifted by court; LGBTQ+ visitors are advised to be discreet and avoid public displays of affection.
