About this event

The day commemorates the iconic 1985 Singh decision, when the Supreme Court recognized refugee claimants’ rights to fundamental justice under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, stating that denying them hearings violated their rights. Panel discussion featuring Lisa Duplessis (The 519), Sharry Aiken (Queen’s University), Vanessa Redditt (Crossroads Refugee Clinic), and Vivian Kenubia. Followed by community connections of food, board games, art, and dance to DJ Blackcat’s beats. Councillor Chris Moise also read out the proclamation declaring April 2026 as Refugee Rights Awareness Month.
