About this event
Black Merlin crafts a sound that feels both ritualistic and cinematic - deep, textured, burning, and transportive. Through his solo work, as part of Kommune and Spectral Empire, and in collaboration with Gordon Pohl as Karamika, George Thompson has established himself as a singular presence in leftfield techno and experimental electronic music. Black Merlin’s discography spans a wide range of respected underground labels. Alongside releases for Andrew Weatherall’s Bird Scarer, Silent Servant’s Jealous God and DJ Nobu BITTA label his work has appeared on Berceuse Heroique, Island of the Gods, ESP Institute, Mannequin Records, and several other carefully curated imprints that have championed his darker, hypnotic, atmospheric sound. His acclaimed series of field-recording-driven albums, created in Indonesia and the remote regions of Papua New Guinea, showcase another dimension of his craft: deeply immersive studies in environment, culture, and atmosphere that blur the boundaries between documentary, sound art, and tribal-industrial rhythm. His live and DJ schedule has taken him across Japan, India, China, America, Australia, Europe, and a broad range of other international stages around the world. Thompson has performed at some of the most respected clubs and festivals in underground techno, including Berghain, Tresor, and Japan’s revered Rural Festival. Black Merlin debuted his live show at Berghain — intense, analog-driven performance, followed by a celebrated live debut in Japan that further expanded his global reach.
