YYC Queer Innovation

Calgary's LGBTQ+ community is primarily centered around the Beltline neighborhood, particularly along 17th Avenue SW. The city hosts Calgary Pride annually and has a growing queer scene with venues like Twisted Element, The Backlot, and Goliath's. Despite being in traditionally conservative Alberta, Calgary has developed a more progressive LGBTQ+ community with various support organizations, queer-friendly businesses, and cultural events that celebrate diversity.

A welcoming weekly drop-in group for 2SLGBTQ+ parents and their children (ages 0–6). It’s a space to meet other families, build supportive relationships, and enjoy child-led play in an inclusive environment.

A weekly social group for 2SLGBTQ+ parents and their young children to connect and play in an inclusive environment.

An evening of culture, community, and celebration featuring dance, dinner, stick games, a 2-Spirit artist panel, drag performance, giveaways, and music by DJ Good Medicine. It’s a space to connect, celebrate identity, and honour 2-Spirit voices and culture. This is a drug and alcohol-free event.

This year, we are honouring queer resilience through our featured art exhibition, “Growing Through the Cracks,” and uplifting and centring the diverse array of voices that make up our 2SLGBTQIA+ community. We are especially excited to highlight the role of the Black and Indigenous community members whose experiences being queer and racialized have often been overlooked or disregarded in LGBTQIA+ spaces.

Sharing the stories of our community members is crucial. By highlighting authentic experiences and honouring the multiple identities within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, we celebrate its rich diversity.

“Growing Through the Cracks” is an artistic showcase of what queer resilience can mean. Just like a dandelion growing through cracks in the pavement: stepped on and hated, but beautiful, innocent, and determined to grow. This resilience can take many different forms, and we are thrilled to showcase many interpretations of this thematic framework.
